Genesis (“De Schepping”)

Bart Moeyaert author, narrator Genesis (“De Schepping”) is the first installment of the succesful musical trilogy created by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble based on three of Haydn's oratorios. The basis for this show was Haydn’s oratorio The Creation, in a never-before-heard arrangement for nine wind instruments by Josef Triebensee, a contemporary of Haydn’s. Vier letzte Lieder

In 1948, a then 84 year old Strauss, wrote one of his most beloved pieces, the Four Last Songs (German: Vier letzte Lieder). He died shortly after its completion in 1949 and was sadly never able to hear the songs being played. The songs display a sense of acceptance and equanimity for his fate. Strauss says goodbye to life and the world says goodbye to a musical language that has now definitely become 'historical'. While Strauss wrote these songs, atonal music had become more popular, and in the second half of the twentieth century, music would take on another radical course. Artistic director Bart Schneemann enlightens the audience (in Dutch) using a projected manuscript. The Four Last Songs sung by alt-mezzo Carina Vinke as Edith Piath on a bar stool in a smoky nightclub, in a new enticing NBE arrangement by Willem van Merwijk. International Day of Peace (Dag van de Vrede)

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. The Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, TivoliVredenburg and Stichting Vluchteling believe that this important day deserves more attention and are working together to organise an extensive celebration. Dag van de Vrede is an annual event including musicians from all over the world. Together with the musicians from the NBE, they pay tribute to peace. The NBE invites guests who have fled war zones to sing, perform spoken word, dance and make music together.

Eternal Delight

Both the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli (1935-2019) and English composer Steve Martland (1954-2013) had a special bond with the NBE, though their music differs greatly. The muscular and rhythmic music of the combative English composer provides spectacle and excitement. The music of the self-composed Kancheli is spiritual and serene. Together they are very strong. The NBE presents an equally powerful programme with works by both composers.

Netherlands Wind Ensemble meets the Xylouris Family

An unexpected meeting that bridges different cultures. The Dionysian energy of Cretan music, with all the freshness, talent and consummate technique of Giorgos Xylouris and of Antonis, Nikos and Apollonia Xylouri, the younger members of the Xylouris family, meets the leading Dutch performers of the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. The ensemble was founded in 1961 and has performed with great musicians from all over the world, such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In the very original program they present in Athens, the lyra, the lute, the voice and the percussion instruments are intertwined with the full sound of the NBE’s wind instruments. Cretan tunes, bringing with them the breeze of Mount Psiloritis and of the Cretan the Libyan Sea, masterfully succeed each other and coexist harmoniously with musics of the world, Baroque works and melodies from operas by Rameau inspired by Greek mythology, transporting the audience to new musical heights.
