St Matthew Passion

26 mrtmaart 2024 - 29 mrtmaart 2024

As Bach's St Matthew Passion resounds throughout the Netherlands prior to Easter, the NBE also makes a tradition of his much-praised and unique adaptation from 2022. Together with the puppeteers of the Duda Paiva Company, a top international cast of soprano Claron McFadden, baritone Rick Zwart, ney virtuoso Sinan Arat and in a special arrangement by young composer and former winner of the NBE composition competition Arjan Linker, the NBE's St Matthew is a theatrical performance in which, with great respect for Bach and the Gospel of Matthew, nothing is sacred and safe. This adaptation of the work fits into a tradition of contemporary translations by the NBE. Artistic director Bart Schneemann for instance already successfully ventured into ‘holy houses’ such as Mozart’s Requiem, Figaro and Don Giovanni, Haydn’s great oratorios and Mahler’s Lied von der Erde. For the ‘holy of holies’ the St Matthew Passion, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble joins forces for the second time with puppet magician Duda Paiva, with whom it created the highly acclaimed performance The Fairy Queen in 2018. Genesis (De Schepping) Festival Stroom

26 junjuni 2024

"In the beginning there was nothing.  It is difficult to imagine that.  Everything that’s here now you must not allow to be here yet.  You must turn out the light, and not be here yourself,  and then forget the dark too,  because in the beginning there was nothing, not even the dark.  If you want to see the beginning of everything, you must omit a great deal.  Including your mother.”  The first days of our planet lie in a distant past, but the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble brings them tangibly closer with its own version of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio hit Die Schöpfung. They invite author Bart Moeyaert to tell the story of creation afresh. And that is literally what he does during the performance, in his own inimitable way. With an endearing wonder, but also the necessary scepticism, he comments on God’s first working week, up to and including the day on which he rested. At Festival STROOM, we will present this special performance once again together with Bart Moeyaert. More information

Genesis (De Schepping) – Nationaal Bomenmuseum Gimborn

28 junjuni 2024

This year, the National Trees Museum Gimborn (Nationaal Bomenmuseum Gimborn) celebrates its 100th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, together with Bart Moeyaert, will perform Genesis (De Schepping) during the cultural weekend of the Trees Museum. 'Genesis' or 'De Schepping  is the first part of the successful music theater trilogy by the NBE & Bart Moeyaert based on "Die Schöpfung" by Franz Joseph Haydn, in an original and special adaptation for wind instruments by Josef Treibensee, a contemporary of Haydn. The Flemish writer Bart Moeyaert wrote his own text to accompany the old music and will himself narrate his creation story in a very engaging manner during the performance. “In the beginning there was nothing. Including your mother.”
