Unlocked

4 sepseptember 2024

Music as a means to express your feelings, to experiment with it in a safe environment, to listen to each other, to inspire one another, and above all, to experience immense musical joy. That's what Unlocked is all about. It's a unique moment where musicians from the NBE and jongNBE share the stage to do the most enjoyable thing there is: making music together. Unlocked was born during the lockdown. When musicians could hardly perform, the NBE and jongNBE created a safe space to express themselves. Unheard-of beautiful things emerged there. We now carry this idea forward into other times. Even now, it’s delightful to step outside the strict lines of classical music and create beautiful things together. No rules, just lots of energy, courage, and freedom. That’s why we play music by composers who have freed themselves from rigid traditions and songs that have liberated peoples from oppression. Our group of musicians and the audience encompass many generations and cultures. To celebrate this, our program includes music from the various countries our NBE players come from. This way, we are guests of one another. Because there are very few spots available, the audience is by invitation only; no tickets are for sale. If you are one of the lucky ones to attend, you will be literally embraced by the music, as the stages are not only in front of but also behind and beside the audience. Fortunately, we can give away a few tickets for Unlocked on Wednesday afternoon at the PHIL in Haarlem, send us an email at info@nbe.nl if you would like to attend. We will also record the concerts so that everyone can experience this special event. The program includes, besides original works, compositions by Claude Debussy, Gordon Goodwin, Eric Whitacre, Pixinguinha, Paco De Lucia, and Arvo Pärt.

Dag van de Vrede (International Day of Peace)

20 sepseptember 2024 - 21 aprapril 2024

In 1981, the United Nations declared September 21 as the International Day of Peace with the aim of creating a worldwide day of ceasefire and non-violence. The Day of Peace is an annual event organized by the Dutch Wind Ensemble in collaboration with TivoliVredenburg and the Refugee Foundation. The Dutch Wind Ensemble invites guest artists from various artistic disciplines who have recently, or some time ago, fled from war zones around the world. Together, we celebrate peace on this special evening filled with music that moves and unites. Benoit de Gryse, Head of Programs & Policy at the Refugee Foundation, says, "Through the universal language of visual arts and music, together with the Dutch Wind Ensemble, we put people fleeing literally and figuratively in the spotlight. In doing so, we highlight the worrying current situation while also showcasing the courage and resilience with which displaced people do everything in their power to continue their lives despite the circumstances." This year, Dutch-Kurdish singer-songwriter Naaz and Syrian buzuq player Kinan Abuakel are our guest soloists. Naaz is known for her unique sound, blending pop and alternative music with influences from her Kurdish heritage. She is praised for her self-written songs, creative style, and strong message of empowerment. Kinan Abuakel has performed in both Syria and the Netherlands. Through his buzuq solos, he aims to showcase the versatility of the Arabic instrument. He is known for collaborations that merge Syrian and Western musical styles. In addition, the Consensus Vocalis chamber choir and the TARAB choir will also perform. Read the programme booklet here. Our concert for the International Day of Peace in 2023 was chosen as one of the top 5 best classical concerts at TivoliVredenburg that year.   The International Day of Peace is made possible by:

Het Paradijs (Paradise) – September Me festival

28 sepseptember 2024

This autumn, NBE and Bart Moeyaert will play Het Paradijs (Paradise) at the September Me music festival in Amersfoort. Every year September Me, the music festival for explorers organised by the Ragazze Quartet, presents a special festival program for young and old with a curious and open mind. Composers, musicians and artists reflect on that year's theme in a creative and inspiring way. This year it is: Out of Love. What fits better with this than the loving program Het Paradijs? With the three oratorios by Franz Joseph Haydn (Die Schöpfung, Die Jahreszeiten and Die Sieben letzten Worte) as a starting point, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, together with the Flemish writer Bart Moeyaert, created a successful music theater trilogy consisting of De Schepping (Genesis), Het Paradijs (Paradise) and De Hemel (Heaven). Paradise is the second part of the cycle based on Die Jahreszeiten in a special arrangement for wind ensemble by Hans van der Heide. Bart Moeyaert wrote a new text for the old music and is himself the narrator during the concerts. The story of Paradise begins where Creation ended. The garden of Eden is one of excess. Bart Moeyaert's language is vibrant. In a few strokes of the pen he describes the exuberant nature and stimulates all the senses. He makes it palpable between the lines that amid all the harmony there are only two dissonants: the man who tells the story and the woman who is with him. Based on an original idea by Bart Schneemann & Bart Moeyaert.

American Roots

2 oktoktober 2024 - 13 oktoktober 2024

The NBE delves deep into the heart of American music. Together with Native American singer Charly Lowry, a musical talent and descendant of the Tuscarora, the NBE explores the beauty of Native American culture, where people feel deeply connected to nature. Also seeking our roots in nature was Philip Glass, whose music for the iconic film "Koyaanisqatsi," adapted for the NBE, serves as a common thread throughout the program. In the language of the Hopi tribe, "koyaanisqatsi" means life out of balance. The film highlights the complex relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Like a meandering river, the two musical landscapes flow together, supported by live projections from the brilliant visual artist Vincent Rang. Based on an original idea by Bart Schneemann & Julian Schneemann. Prior to each concert, an introduction to the performance is provided. The introduction is free, but for some venues, reservations may be required (see theater websites for more information).

Composers’ competition – Showcases

17 oktoktober 2024 - 20 oktoktober 2024

Every year, the young composer's competition On the way to the New Year's Concert proves its strength. Composing is nothing more or less than coming up with your own music. Whether you play it, sing it, on your own, with your band, a friend, musicians from your own orchestra, jazz or steel band: everything is allowed and everything is possible, in all styles. All that matters is that you came up with it yourself! The competition appears to be a springboard for many serious composing talents in the Netherlands. SHOWCASES During the Showcases, the regional preliminary rounds of the young composer's competition, the young participants get the opportunity to show what they have to offer live for the first time. A casual yet serious moment to present their piece, song, rap or other form of music to the audience and the jury. The jury chooses six winners per region who will proceed to the Composers Weekend. These participants are mentored by an arranger, who helps them make an arrangement of their composition for the NBE! Read more about the young composers' competition and how to participate.

De Zingende Strijkstok (The Singing Bow)

1 novnovember 2024 - 13 novnovember 2024

De Zingende Strijkstok (The Singing Bow) is a continuation of the touching performance Troubadours, which told the story of plucked string instruments from various cultures. In this new production, bowed string instruments take center stage, in a unique collaboration with NBE. Two talented, classically trained cellists lead the way: Franco-Algerian Nesrine and Dutch-Japanese-Brazilian Chieko Donker Duyvis. Both have found their voices during their musical journeys and now combine their cello playing with singing. The third remarkable guest musician is Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, better known as Epi. He plays the traditional Mongolian Morin Khuur and is a master of Mongolian throat singing. Three unique musicians, each bringing their own cultural roots to life through their music. Together with the distinctive NBE, they create an inspiring mix of sounds that transcends boundaries and deeply touches the listener. Composer Florian Maier wrote the opening piece of this performance, titled Pangeans. In this work, all three guest musicians sing and play together. Pangeans not only refers to the ancient supercontinent but also to the idea that the world should be a place for everyone. As Maier puts it: “We musicians might be the largest tribe on Earth. We have no country of our own, but we speak a language that unites us all, whether we communicate with words or with our instruments. We complement each other, inspire each other, and share joy with one another and with the rest of the world.” Based on an original concept by Bart Schneemann Prior to the performance, there will be an introduction by musicologist Huib Ramaer. The introduction is free of charge, but in some venues, you may need to make a reservation (check the theater websites for more information).

jongNBE – Waldesruhe and a Requiem

10 novnovember 2024

At the Cello Biennale, jongNBE will perform 'Waldesruhe and a Requiem' together with three young cellists from the prestigious Kronberg Academy. In the Requiem by the Czech cellist and composer David Popper, they will showcase their lyrical side. Antonín Dvořák composed Waldesruhe and Rondo, filled with Bohemian and Slavic elements, for his chamber music partner Hanuš Wihan, who also inspired him to compose his cello concerto. In the Siete Canciones Populares, the folk music is even more directly audible and recognisable. These popular songs have been arranged for all possible instruments, but never before for cello with wind instruments. The Argentine-German cellist and composer Manuel Lipstein will perform his own new concertino with jongNBE.
