The Unknown Chaplin

3 mrtmaart 2020 - 22 mrtmaart 2020

With a smile and a tear Six hilarious, wacky and melancholy silent films from the great universal genius Charlie Chaplin.  As was usual in those days, these films had neither music nor soundtrack. That’s why NBE asked four composers - Reza Namavar, Micha Hamel, Oene van Geel and Julian Schneemann - to write new music that seamlessly accompanies and supports the films, an authentic and contemporary interpretation of important film history heritage and an ode to Chaplin’s artistry. Artistic director Bart Schneemann: “I’ve dreamed of doing a project with Charlie Chaplin films for a long time. Of course there are more greats in the film world, like that crazy Buster Keaton, but in my opinion Chaplin is the universal genius. With him it’s never just about the humour. There is always something behind it. He’s the Johan Cruiff of silent film. We deliberately didn’t go for classics such as The Great Dictator or Modern Times. We show the lesser-known Chaplin from before 1918. They are really very funny and moving films that few people will know. " The NBE worked together with Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, curator silent film at Amsterdam’s Eye Filmmuseum and the Cineteca di Bologna, who restored the films. The result is unbelievable. The four composers were chosen for their distinctive qualities. They think eclectically, each in their own original way. Oene van Geel has roots in jazz, Reza Namavar in both Bach and the revolutionary avant-garde. Micha Hamel is perhaps the real film composer of the four. Julian Schneemann has developed his own unique style and is inspired by music from all over the world. In addition to the slapstick and fun, the program also has a serious layer, as is also always the case with Chaplin. As contrast to the newly composed soundtracks, we play Philip Glass’ most contemplative work, written for the film Mishima, a Life in Four Chapters. In collaboration with: EYE FILMMUSEUM COMPOSITiION: PHILIP GLASS, MICHA HAMEL, OENE VAN GEEL, REZA NAMAVAR, JULIAN SCHNEEMANN FILM: CHARLIE CHAPLIN

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony

16 decdecember 2020

All together! Ludwig van Beethoven was born 250 years ago. For this mammoth Beethoven year the NBE has chosen one of his most iconic works: the ninth symphony, with the famous ‘Ode to Joy’ based on Friedrich Schiller’s text. In the political turmoil around 1800, it is clear where Beethoven's sympathies lay: he was a declared advocate of the French Revolution and embraced the ideals of universal equality, freedom and brotherhood. After turning the entire symphonic genre upside down, especially with his third ("Eroica"), fifth, sixth ("Pastoral") and seventh, Beethoven went even further with his ninth and final symphony by breaking open the boundaries of the genre  and introducing the human voice. It was no gimmick, but an ultimate artistic necessity. Soloists and choir literally shout the message: "be embraced, millions!" In the past two centuries, the piece has lost none of its expressive power. On the contrary. This story about brotherhood, exhorting us to embrace each other, is still as urgent today as it was 250 years ago.  A special NBE choir will be assembled, with singers from diverse cultures and world regions, a cross secton of Dutch society. For each performance the NBE choir will be supplemented with local choirs. Beethoven’s 9th: passionate and hopeful, an ode to solidarity and brotherhood. COMPOSITION: Symphony NR. 9, LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN ARRANGEMENT: TOEK NUMAN IN COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL CHOIRS

New Year’s Concert 2021

1 janjanuari 2021

“It’s hard to think of a nicer way to start off the New Year than with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble’s New Year’s Concert in the Concertgebouw. Every year it’s a cheerful group, although the melancholy and depth are never far away, and each time when it comes to an end, there’s the same lament: if only all people on earth were musicians, there would never be another war.” Het Parool (****) The Netherlands Wind Ensemble’s New Year’s concerts have become as inseparable from New Year’s Day as ski jumping and the Viennese Waltz. It’s a surprising musical party with unexpected guests from all over the world, extraordinary stories and new compositions from young composers. For the past decades the NBE has played to a completely sold-out concert hall in The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on New Year’s Day. Unfortunately, due to corona virus, the NBE won’t be able to welcome any of their loyal fans this year. The NBE has turned this huge disappointment into a unique opportunity: all the chairs have been removed from their normal places in the hall and for the first time in the history of The Royal Concertgebouw, the musicians will not just be playing on the main stage, but at different surprising locations within this imposing national monument. Prepare for a totally different concert than what you are used to, with guest appearances by virtuous stringed instrument players, passionate singers from near and far and internationally praised variety acts. With these exciting guests from different theatre disciplines and cultures, the NBE musicians would like to offer you an incredible experience for the eyes and ears with this New Year’s Concert full of hope, trust and inspiration.

An Ode to Gia Kancheli

21 janjanuari 2021 - 3 febfebruari 2021

The NBE brings a tribute in a theatrical show to an old friend: Georgian composer Gia Kancheli, who sadly passed away in 2019. Kancheli's music is spiritual, sometimes almost cinematic, but always with a nod to his beloved homeland Georgia. The NBE will play the unknown masterpiece 'Magnum Ignotum' and 'Miniatures'. Kancheli wrote his tranquil Miniatures for violin and piano, adapted it himself for viola and string orchestra and also made it known that he wished the pieces would be adapted for other instruments. Dutch composers adapted parts of Kancheli's cycle specially for the NBE. In consequence, the entire palette of the NBE will be heard, and by doing so, the musicians will cast a nostalgic light on the heavenly Georgian sounds.
