Teaching and making music go hand in hand for trombonist Alexander Verbeek (1973). Whether he’s performing at the ‘Nieuwe Kerk’ in Amsterdam for King Willem-Alexander or composing songs with high school students in the classroom, for Alexander, both experiences are equally valuable.
Since September 2011, Alexander has been a principal teacher in the classical music department at Codarts – Conservatory – Rotterdam. “The great thing about teaching at such a high level is discovering whether your techniques and exercises work for other trombonists too.”

For Alexander, who plays both alto and tenor trombone, international tours with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra are always learning experiences. “What’s special about such a tour is the simple fact that you have more time to talk with colleagues. Normally, everyone is in their own rhythm, but on tour, you have to adapt. This creates an opportunity to reflect and philosophize about music and other beautiful things in life.”
